It is a bomber, a fighter, and a high-speed plane all in one. It accomplishes this by using a unique swing-wing design. The wings are attached to its fuselage (body) at a pivot point toward the back of the plane. When the wings are fully extended, the plane can fly slowly to drop bombs precisely on their targets or land on short runways. When the wings are swept farther forward, the aircraft takes advantage of the maneuverability that forward-swept wings offer, and becomes an agile fighter. The F-111 was a medium-sized bomber that could defend itself like a fighter and speed away at more than 1600 miles an hour. The Switchblade was at first sighted only near Cannon Air Force Base in New Mexico, at Langley Air Force Base, and Armarillo, Texas. At first, it was thought that the Switchblade was a standard[going from fully back to normal] swing-wing plane like the F-111, but now we know that the swing-wing design is more complex - and better. The design is explained in the series of pictures and captions above. &lt;/a&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;a name="top"&gt;In November 1999, the Switchblade was patented by the Northrop Grumman Corporation: U.S. Patent 5,984,231. It states, "An aircraft with a variable forward-sweep wing and the method of configuring the wing in an optimal position for a desired flight regime. The variable forward-sweep wing is positionable from an essentially unswept position to a full-forward sweep position. In the unswept position the wing is approximately orthogonal to a fuselage centerline, while in the full-forward sweep position the wing has approximately a delta wing planform[platform]. Moreover, as the wing position changes from the unswept position to the full-forward sweep position the trailing edge becomes the leading edge. In addition, the aforementioned apparatus may be used in a method to configure the aircraft for flight in a desired flight regime. This method includes moving the wing to an optimal position for the desired flight regime." Apart from being very abstract, this patent signifies that the Switchblade will soon be declassified (declassification usually follows a year after a patent filing). &lt;/a&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;a name="top"&gt;If you are interested, the Switchblade is the result of work done by both Northrop and the Grumman Aircraft Corporation, before they merged in 1994.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.area51zone.com/aircraft/x-29.jpg" align="left" border="0" height="150" width="204" /&gt;Grumman developed the X-29 (left). The X-29 was the first aircraft that employed the forward-sweeping wing design. The FSW(forward-swept wing) design made an aircraft extremely unstable, and therefore, highly maneuverable. The only problem was that a human pilot couldn't control the unstable aircraft, but that was quickly solved by making high-speed computers control the super-responsive wings (fly-by-wire system) and making the wings out of special flexible materials. The result was a highly maneuverable aircraft design with a promising future as being used for military fighters with excellent dogfighting capabilities. &lt;/a&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;a name="top"&gt;&lt;img src="http://www.area51zone.com/aircraft/yf23.jpg" align="right" border="0" height="150" width="259" /&gt;Northrop created the YF-23 (right), which lost to an aircraft competition to Lockheed's F-22, because the YF-23 was better (actually, because of politics, but the YF-23 &lt;i&gt;was&lt;/i&gt; better). The YF-23 was an advanced stealth fighter.&lt;br /&gt;None of these airplanes were developed further (shame, shame...) &lt;i&gt;as far as we know&lt;/i&gt;, but the Switchblade may be the aircraft that came after both designs. &lt;/a&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;a name="top"&gt;So, in short, these two companies put their strengths together and designed the Switchblade. &lt;!-- START pictures --&gt; Lampu Ostar Lighting LED buatan Osram yang siap dipasarkan dapat memancarkan cahaya 1000 lumens sehingga cukup untuk menerangi ruangan dari ketinggian sekitar 2 meter.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Lumen merupakan satuan yang menunjukkan kekuatan cahaya yang dipancarkan. Sebagai gambaran, sebuah lampu pijar 60 watt dapat memancarkan cahaya 730 lumen dan lampu halogen 50 watt memancarkan 900 lumen. Untuk memancarkan cahaya 1000 lumen, lampu buatan anak perusahaan Siemens itu memanfaatkan enam chip khusus yang terintegrasi dalam satu sistem pengatur cahaya.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Sebagai pengganti lampu, LED sangat potensial. Selain ukurannya kecil, LED juga hemat daya sebab efisiensinya tinggi. Ostar Lighting LED saja menghasilkan 75 lumen perwatt dengan arus kerja 350 miliampere. Rasio perubahan energi listrik menjadi cahaya jauh lebih besar daripada lampu pijar. Selain itu, untuk membuat LED tidak dibutuhkan logam beracun timbal atau merkuri sehingga lebih ramah lingkungan. Daya tahannya juga mencapai 10 kali lipat daripada lampu halogen dan 50 kali lipat dibandingkan lampu pijar sehingga secara kesleuruhan lebih murah.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Namun, selama bertahun-tahun LED belum digunakan sebagai sumber penerangan ruangan karena tidak dapat menghasilkan cahaya yang terang. Berbagai jenis LED telah dibuat dan dipakai sebagai lampu latar pada layar ponsel, lampu indikator berbagai alat elektronik, atau lampu papan reklame.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Untung ada Osram. Lampu LED buatan Osram generasi sebelumnya yang diberi nama Golden Dragon LED telah digunakan di supermarket Migros di Swiss. Untuk menerangi pusat perbelanjaan tersebut digunakan 18 ribu unit lampu yang kekuatan cahayanya masih lebih rendah daripada Ostar Lighting LED. Tentu saja tulisan ini dibuat bukan untuk mempromosikan filmnya, namun lebih kepada melihat bagaimana sebuah negara seperti Amerika mengenalkan robot di masa depan kepada masyarakat atau rakyatnya. Kenapa demikian, karena paling tidak film-film atau media-media yang dibuat juga mencerminkan impian atau harapan dari sebuah masyarakat atau rakyatnya. Karena sebuah pepatah mengatakan, apa yang kita lakukan hari ini adalah mimpi kita kemarin. &lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Di kedua film tersebut digambarkan bagaimana robot menjadi musuh dari manusia dan melanggar aturan tentang hukum-hukum robot yang ditulis oleh Isaac Asimov yang terkenal dengan hukum Asimovnya. Nah perilaku sebuah negara mengenalkan teknologi itu tidak terlepas dari budaya negara tersebut.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Istilah robot diperkenalkan pertama kali oleh seorang berkebangsaan Chekoslowakia bernama Karel Capek (1890-1938) di tahun 1920, berasal dari bahasa setempat robota yang berarti budak atau kerja manual. Dari situlah istilah tersebut digunakan sebagai pengganti istilah budak mekanik yang digunakan membantu pekerjaan manusia. Itulah sebabnya mengapa negara-negara Barat seringkali memandang robot dengan nuansa perspektif yang negatif. &lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Lain halnya di negara Jepang, masyarakatnya mempunyai ketertarikan dengan robot yang memiliki status layaknya seorang bintang pujaan. Seperti di World Expo 2005 yang lalu di Perf. Aichi, pavilion-pavilion yang menonjolkan pertunjukan robot-robot yang bisa berbicara, berlari, menyanyi, menari, dan memainkan alat-alat instrumen musik, menyedot animo pengunjung yang luar biasa meskipun untuk itu pengunjung harus rela antri berjam-jam untuk bisa menontonnya. Konon kabarnya, tidak cukup waktu sehari dua hari untuk bisa masuk ke semua pavilionnya. &lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Juga pada even-even yang lainpun, orang-orang berduyun-duyun bergandengan bersama keluarganya mendatangi pameran-pameran robot di berbagai tempat, bertanya dengan para pakar untuk mendapatkan penjelasan singkat tentang robot. Dan sudah menjadi hal yang umum di masyarakat Jepang melihat orangtua dan anak-anaknya berpose bersama robot sebagai momen kenangan.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Ini semua tidak terlepas dari adanya perbedaan cara pandang dan cara mengenalkan robot kepada masyarakatnya. Lihat saja contoh kasus pengaruh manga (komik) tentang robot seperti film kartun legendaris dan paling digemari Astro Boy atau Tetsuwan Atom-kun (kun panggilan untuk anak), sebuah film animasi yang menggambarkan robot berbentuk seorang anak laki-laki seusia anak-anak SD yang bersahabat dengan manusia, mungkin bisa menjadi contoh terbaik sebagai penyebab pendekatan yang berbeda tentang robot antara Negara Barat dengan Jepang.. Tetapi memang bukan itu saja, penyebabnya, karena menurut akar budaya mereka, kecintaan Jepang kepada robot juga kembali kepada masa lalu mereka di masa periode Edo (1603-1867). Boneka Chahakobi Ningyo&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Selama periode Edo, boneka-boneka termasyhur yang dibuat dapat bergerak secara otomatis menggunakan bantuan benang dan mekanisme mirip kerja timer atau pewaktu dengan menggunakan bantuan pegas. Bahkan istilah karakuri itu sendiri pun yang dinisbahkan kepada mekanisme otomatis, sudah muncul pada periode tersebut. &lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Uniknya boneka karakuri yang muncul di jaman Edo tersebut sudah sangat populer sekali di kalangan masyarakatnya, dan perlu dicatat bahwa penggunaan teknologi tersebut bukanlah diperuntukkan untuk kalangan industri ataupun militer, namun semata hanyalah untuk hiburan ataupun tontonan semisal chahakobi ningyo (Gambar 1) atau boneka untuk menyajikan minuman teh khas Jepang kepada para tamu dan atau yang terkenal pula yakni yumihiki doji (boneka yang dapat memanah) (Gambar 2). &lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;&lt;img src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_TuwJQJ7o09k/RgPZQyVqUZI/AAAAAAAAAAU/r3h-V1fWDZ0/s320/indra2.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5045114889998848402" /&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Gambar 2. Boneka Yumihiki Doji&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Para ahli pembuat boneka tersebut bersaing satu dengan yang lain untuk membuat boneka karakuri dengan teknik yang terbaik. Sangat mungkin atmosfir tersebut mirip dengan keadaan atmosfir sekarang ini di Jepang. Banyak sekali ahli-ahli di bidang robotika yang juga bersaing membuat robot-robot mirip manusia atau humanoid robot yang bisa berjalan, bercakap-cakap dan bermain dengan manusia. &lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Bahkan sudah menjadi budaya tersendiri di antara perusahaan-perusahaan terkemuka di Jepang untuk berlomba menciptakan robot yang ahhirnya menjadi trademerk tersendiri bagi perusahaan tersebut. Katakanlah seperti Honda yang membuat ASIMO sebagai robot bipedal pertama yang bisa berjalan dengan kedua kakinya, Sony dengan QRIO yang tampil menarik ketika menari dan memimpin orkestra, dan Toyota yang terkenal dengan robot-robot yang mahir memainkan berbagai alat instrumen musik, serta Murata yang mengeluarkan MurataBOY yang konon bisa mengendarai sepeda roda dua di atas titian sebuah jembatan dengan satu pilar saja serta masih banyak yang lain.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Pengetahuan, teknologi dan kepekaan yang memberikan pesona dan kecintaan akan robot kepada masyarakat bangsa Jepang sekarang ini, dan juga kekuatan untuk mengembangkannya berakar secara mendalam dari budaya bangsanya yang mempunyai sejarah yang sangat panjang. Dari sudut pandang ini kita bisa mengatakan bahwasanya robot merupakan sebuah aset intelektual yang sangat penting dari budaya Jepang. &lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Bagaimana dengan negara dan bangsa kita Indonesia tercinta? Kalau negara dan bangsa seperti Jepang sekarang ini ibarat sebuah pohon besar yang sudah lebat dan ranum buahnya, itu tidak luput dari nenek-nenek moyang mereka yang menanam biji-bijinya yang mereka rawat sebaik-baiknya. Untuk membangun negara yang luas dan besar ini juga dibutuhkan perjuangan yang besar dan panjang serta berkesinambungan. &lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Pemerintah dan rakyat harus bahu membahu untuk itu. Pemerintah perlu merumuskan kebijakan pendidikan yang tepat kepada rakyatnya agar bangsa ini bisa membangun budaya untuk cepat dapat mengejar ketinggalannya. Kalau kebanyakan orang pesimis dengannya, maka boleh jadi mereka yang pesimis tersebut secara tidak sadar telah "membunuh" salah satu aset yang akan menjadi cikal bakal budaya itu sendiri. Justru kita lah yang harus dan akan membangun budaya bangsa ini, bukan orang lain atau bangsa lain. &lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Mari kita bangun Indonesia dengan membangun akar budaya intelektual di masyarakatnya. Kalau kita sekarang menanam biji-bijinya, kelak generasi kemudian yang akan menuai buahnya. Kalau mereka bisa, kenapa kita kita tidak. Ini berarti jarak 500 km akan dicapai dalam waktu kurang dari 2 jam. Shinkansen terbaru ini diberi nama seri N-700 dan akan mulai diluncurkan pada tahun 2007.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Shinkansen generasi terbaru ini juga tidak akan menyediakan gerbong khusus bagi perokok. Sebagai gantinya akan disediakan ruangan sempit untuk yang ingin merokok. Ketika penumpang ingin merokok, maka masuk ke ruangan sempit ini sampai selesai merokok baru kembali ke kursi penumpang. Ruangan ini memuat antara 2 sampai 4 orang dan dalam satu kereta akan ada sekitar enam ruangan sempit untuk para perokok. Perlu diketahui selama ini shinkansen selalu menyediakan gerbong khusus perokok.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Namun ada komentar menarik di website Japan Today tentang kebijakan baru shinkansen ini. Kebijakan ini dikatakan kebijakan yang buruk. Bagi perokok tentu ini merepotkan. Sedangkan bagi orang yang tidak merokok, maka ini akan menjadi "neraka" karena akan berdekatan dengan perokok, yang meskipun tidak merokok di dalam gerbong penumpang, tapi baunya akan tetap mengganggu orang yang tidak merokok.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Memang Jepang mengetatkan aturan dalam hal rokok ini. Sejak dahulu di setiap stasiun selalu ada smoking corner tempat para perokok berkumpul. Akhir-akhir ini beberapa kota dan kampus telah menerapkan larangan untuk berjalan sambil merokok.
